Formals, Nights Out, and the weekend

Wills Dining Hall (Harry Potteresque)
Me in my formal robesDown at the JCR bar

Saturday, Oct 15, 2005.
Hey,

Had a great time last night. It was my first formal meal at Wills. At 7pm we all dressed up in our formal attire (guys in suits, girls in formal gowns) and headed to the dining hall (above). You must get there between 7pm and 7:20. The hall Warden arrives at 7:30 – and everyone attending must be present to stand while he enters. According to proper formal etiquette we stand while he enters with all the formal guests and we are seated after he sits. Then you are not allowed to stand until he leaves (not even to go to the bathroom). It was still pretty cool. You’re allowed to bring in a corked bottle of wine or champagne, and the food is brought to you by servers. Oh yeah, formal gowns (my robes) have to be worn at all times during the meal, even if you’re hot.

After dinner we went down to the JCR bar (the hall pub) for some drinks and disco. Some ppl went out the the club, while others went to the ‘Freshers ball’ at black tie formal, where the whole student union building is transformed into various dance rooms for freshers. Ie – live band, jazz, swing, emo, hiphop, alternative, etc. It was pretty cool.

As for school, thursday and friday were both very busy – as lectures are picking up, i’ve started my labs and tutorials. Thursday was lectures in the morning (Epidemiology, Anatomy) and then a 2.5 hour epidemiology tutorial in the afternoon. Friday was biochemistry and more physiology, with a 3 hour anatomy lab. It was all intros/ethics with a bit of obeservation, it didn’t seem like much, but they managed to keep us there till 5pm on a friday afternoon.

Thurday night I went to a club in downtown bristol. Nothing to exciting, cheap drinks which is nice. The only real difference with the clubs is that there’s more people and they’re bigger, but I think that’s because England is much more crowded than Canada. Here they have about 3 times the population of Canada – squished into this tiny country.

It is now 2:18pm. This morning I got up about 10am – went for brunch (where they also give you a bagged dinner, bagette, chocolate milk, fruit). At 12pm I had a rugby practice. It was still fun. They started with a ‘touch’ match, but at the end we practiced full contact. I managed to get a nice gash across my neck, either when I was tackled (a kleat) or someone’s fingernail (which is more likely) It’s not that bad, just a little worse than a cat scratch.

It’s beautiful today here, and the weather is about 12-18 degrees Celsius. You can wear shorts to play sports. Apparently this is a really mild October for england, so i’m told.

Now its off to do homework – biochem problems, and physiology.

  • hahaha that photo of you in your gown is nice… except that you look wasted! :( I can’t believe that you’re really over there, it still feels like I should be able to walk into a lecture here and see you. But I’m sooooooooooo glad you’re having a good time. It sounds amazing!!!!!

Good luck with the classes babe! And the rugby practices

  • Hey Pete!

Thanks for sending me the link to your fabulous website! Now I can keep track of your adventures even though you’re an ocean away…

It’s just not the same without ya Pete! Everytime I drive past your ol’place on Scottsdale I have to remind myself that you actually don’t live there anymore :) Everything here is pretty much the same, it’s starting to get cooler and classes are in full swing… blah blah blah

I’m staying busy with IHC and classes and now I’m running in the CSA Elections to sit on their board! I don’t know why I get myself into all these things, but you know I love it.

I’m heading out so I’ll cut this short — but know that I’ll be checking out what your up to now and then.

    Much luv

    Keens :)
